Reflection: Assignment One

What did you learn from this assignment?

This assignment made me think firstly about what drives me. I really wanted this assignment to be authentic, about something that matters to me. When I settled on the topic of the educational advantages of blogging in the library, it tapped right into my English-teacherly-self. I immediately got lost in the literature of the potential of interactive schoolwide blogs, and what classes and the community could do with this Web 2.0 tool. It made me excited to convey the potential academic benefits of blogging.

What did you find to be easy? What did you find to be difficult?

I found the content research to be easy and interesting. I found excellent articles and information about blogging in school libraries. It was also enjoyable to browse through some excellent school library blogs like Buffy Hamilton’s and others.
The most difficult part of this assignment has proven to be my insufficient technology skills. I have done basic bullet powerpoint presentations before, but nothing using flickr images and having to manipulate these images or to put text over them. This has shown me that I desperately need to familiarize myself with powerpoint and other programs.

What might you do differently next time?

Start earlier!!!
I am stressed and frustrated right now because I have a wealth of information and I have finished a traditional powerpoint, but I am at a loss for how to transform it with my images. Right now my images are on slides, and my text is on separate slides. If I was at this point yesterday during my meeting with you, I know you would have walked me through how to combine the text and the images. So, next time, I will start my projects earlier. And as a personal and professional goal, I will try to experiment more with Web 2.0 tools as well as software like Powerpoint.
